Top Tips to Support Students during Exam Season

Exam season can be a stressful and challenging time for many students, but with the right support and strategies in place, they can navigate it successfully. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or guardian, it is important to provide the necessary support to help students manage and prepare ahead of their exams, as well as afterwards. Here at Class People, we understand that exam season can be as stressful for parents and teachers as it is for students, as we all want the best results for our children and pupils. So, we wanted to share our top tips on how to provide support and guidance during exam season to ensure the best outcomes!

Provide Emotional Support

Emotional support from parents, teachers, and others can significantly boost a student's confidence and motivation. Offer a listening ear, allowing them to communicate their feelings before their exams so they do not struggle alone. Ensure you provide encouragement and praise for their hard work and dedication.

Ensure They Are Prepared for Their First Day

Encourage students to prepare the day before with any equipment and stationery needed for their exams. On the day of the exam, small preparations can make a big difference in helping students feel at ease. A healthy breakfast (the most important meal of the day!) is essential to maintain energy levels. Make sure they are aware of their exam times; we recommend students arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes early to reduce anxiety and review any notes or revision prior to their exam.

Provide Study Sessions

For students who may struggle to study at home, provide sessions to revisit any topics or subjects they find difficult. Offering dedicated time for any questions or guidance ensures they have the support they need to prepare as best as possible. These study sessions could also include tips on how to answer specific questions and manage their time during the exam to complete their paper efficiently. Ensure students take regular breaks and do not overwhelm themselves with too much information, allowing for better retention of their revision.

Use Past Exam Papers

Offer past exam papers so students can practise with real-life examples of how questions may be worded. Encourage students to create revision techniques that suit their learning style, whether it?s using flashcards, doing past questions, creating posters, or other methods.

Introduce Stress Management Techniques

Stress management is critical during exam season. Help students by introducing the following techniques:

  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Simple breathing exercises or meditation can help calm the mind.
  • Time Management: Use techniques like the Pomodoro Technique to manage study time effectively.
  • Positive Self-Talk: Encourage them to replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations.
  • Relaxation Techniques: Activities like yoga, listening to music, or engaging in hobbies can provide much-needed relaxation.

From all of us here at Class People, we wish you the best of luck with your exams and encourage all relatives and teachers to offer a helping hand through this daunting period.
